“WTOP Top 10 Contest” will award $1,000 each to ten local restaurants in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia. Nominations open July 18 and close July 22 with voting set for August 1 - 12.
SXM & Mitsubishi Extend Agreement
SiriusXM and Mitsubishi Motors North America have extended their agreement through 2028. Alpha Media has hired Geoff Owens in Portland as PD for KBFF-FM and KINK-HD2. Owens moves to Portland from Bicoastal Media's KDUK in Eugene where he was PD and Afternoon Drive Host.
Matenar Ends Run on WTMJ Milwaukee
Jane Matenaer has been on Milwaukee radio since 1984. Her last day was Friday. Matenaer began working at WTMJ-AM in 2015 after she was let go by WLDB-FM where she co-hosted mornings since 2010. Before WLDB, Matenar worked at WMYX-FM for 25 years.
Programmer Steve Smith Passes
The 40-year programming vet unexpectedly passed away in his sleep on July 7th, according to Smith's family. Audacy COO Susan Larkin, who worked with Smith at Cox Media Group, posted on social media, "I am shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of our friend and colleague Steve Smith. I loved working with Steve and he was a true friend."
The Basics Are Important
(By Mike McVay) Once upon a time, I lived in a condo, high above the city. I watched a high rise being built near my building. Day after day for a little more than a year, the construction was below street level, and the amount of time that went into the foundation seemed to be as much time as went into the above ground structure. The foundation has to be solid if a building is going to reach high into the sky.
