The long-time sports host used his Thursday radio show to let listeners know he’s been in miserable joint pain for the last seven years. The drugs he had to take to deal with the pain, including prednisone and Vicodin, left him feeling depressed and suicidal.

Patrick said he had pain in “both hands, both shoulders, both elbows, both hips, both knees. He says he couldn’t even tie his shoes. He described it like having the flu with being nauseous. The doctor eventually diagnosed him with what is called polymyalgia rheumatica. He would turn to alcohol at night to ease his pain.

Once diagnosed Patrick was put on “light” chemotherapy which helped alleviate the pain. That, however, cause new side effects including headaches and memory loss. He told the story of having dinner with his daughter one night but had to text her the next day because he forgot about the dinner.

Patrick is 62. He says he’ll be receiving chemotherapy for five more months.
