A longtime voice on the airwaves of North Carolina’s Triangle, Patterson died following a long period of declining health. He was 81.
Patterson worked in radio for six decades, mostly at Triangle stations, including WQDR, WDNC, and WKIX-AM. He was known for his signature wit. Along with reading the daily, local school menu (punctuated by a recorded “Yum yum!”), Patterson and his cohorts would spin tales set in a universe that sounded like a cross between Hee Haw and A Prairie Home Companion.
Patterson is survived by his wife of 34 years, Becky, as well as four children and step-children and seven grandchildren. Visitation and memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh.
Pat was one of the funniest and most loved disc jockeys in the history of radio, and a truly great guy. It’s a testament to listeners’ love for Pat that he stayed in Raleigh through most of his career. Hats off.
