In memory of its former longtime chairman, the Broadcasters Foundation of America has introduced The Philip J Lombardo Spirit Award. The inaugural recipient of the Spirit Award will be announced in the lead-up to the 2025 Golden Mic Award Gala.

This award commemorates the enduring spirit and commitment of the late Phil Lombardo, by recognizing individuals who have significantly supported the Foundation’s mission of assisting broadcasters facing hardship. The Broadcasters Foundation itself has distributed over $15 million in aid over the past two decades, with about $1.8 million earmarked for distribution this year.

The Philip J Lombardo Spirit Award is sponsored by Lombardo’s family, including his wife Kim Lombardo, and his longtime business associate, Mario Gabelli. It aims to honor Lombardo’s leadership and his efforts to mobilize support for broadcasters in need.

Lombardo, who was also a former NAB Joint Board Chairman, passed away at 88 in January. As BFoA Chairman, he increased the annual financial assistance from $60,000 to nearly $850,000 over his thirteen-year tenure. In 1982, he founded Citadel Communications, which was sold to Nexstar Media Group in 2023. In honor of his contributions, the BFoA named its annual celebrity golf tournament at the NAB Show in Las Vegas after Lombardo in 2010.

Broadcasters Foundation board member and retired Citadel Communications President and COO Ray Cole said, “Phil believed in giving back to an industry he deeply cared about, contributing both time and treasure to support the vital mission of the Broadcasters Foundation: helping fellow broadcasters during a difficult time in their lives.”

BFoA Chairman Scott Herman said, “Phil brought the sense of urgency that is often needed to give donors an understanding of why they need to donate to our charitable purpose. He led the board for many years, overseeing significant advancements that brought in more funds, thereby allowing us to continue to distribute financial aid to broadcasters in need.”
