Veteran sports broadcaster Mike Rice is making a comeback to Greeley, CO’s KFKA-AM, taking on the role of play-by-play announcer for the University of Northern Colorado’s men’s basketball team. Rice previously worked at KFKA from 1991 to 2002.
He served in various roles including programming director and on-air talent, and he also covered Northern Colorado football and both men’s and women’s basketball from 1995 to 2004. Rice will replace Jerry Schemmel, who will continue his other broadcasting duties including covering Colorado Rockies’ games and hosting his talk show, Amazing Americans.
Rice’s commentary starts Monday, November 6, when the UNC men’s team kicks off its regular season against Colorado. Additionally, Rice will host the weekly UNC coaches’ show beginning Tuesday, November 21.
“What a thrill to call UNC basketball again,” Rice said. “Thank you to KFKA owner Damon Sasso and general manager Brady Hull for this opportunity to return to the station where I started in broadcasting.”
