Radio’s Best GMs Spill Their Secrets To Management

The Radio Wayne Awards honors the best of the best in radio sales. That’s why for our September 2023 issue of Radio Ink, we asked our finalists to provide insight into critical industry issues. This year we asked our Market Manager/General Manager of the Year finalists to answer the following question:

“What is the greatest challenge to managing so many different kinds of people?”

Here are some of the responses we received:

“For me, it’s understanding their motivations. Managing different types of people is what makes an organization unique, and everyone lends their own view and expertise. Once you understand their motivations and strengths, you get them to work together more harmoniously.”

“It is a positive to have a team made up of many different voices and personalities because it makes the organization stronger and more vibrant as long as we, as managers, ensure that we give all voices an outlet to express themselves and make a difference and do not just listen to the loudest voices.

“The challenge is if you don’t have the right people. When you have the right people, you can spend more time doing the things you need to do and concentrating on the things you need to concentrate on, instead of managing.”

What do you think? Interested in learning who said what? Our September 2023 issue comes out this Monday, September 11.
