Ken Orchard, known as a pioneer in California radio, passed away at 85 on August 17 after a battle with Parkinson’s. Known for introducing Victor Valley’s first FM station that played contemporary music 24/7, Orchard had a broadcasting career that spanned more than sixty years.

Orchard’s first station, KVVQ 103.1, launched in August 1980 and quickly became a household name in Victorville and its surrounding areas. Besides its CHR format, Orchard used his platform for community engagement, including supporting the campaign for Hesperia’s cityhood.

However, the station faced financial setbacks and eventually closed in 1997. Undeterred, Orchard continued to contribute to the industry through Orchard Media Services, a consulting firm he started with his daughter. He focused on helping radio and TV stations with FCC compliance until his retirement in 2014.

A memorial service for Orchard is scheduled for August 31 at Bible Baptist Church in Victorville. He is survived by his wife, two children, 11 grandchildren, and over 14 great-grandchildren.
