KIIM (99.5 FM) in Tucson raised more than $54,000 for a local children’s non-profit organization during its annual Penny Pitch charity event.

The event, which took place between December 12 and December 14, invited listeners to donate spare pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters or any other change they had to benefit Arizona’s Children Association. The goal of each event is to raise more than 1 million pennies ($10,000) for the organization.

The radio station raised more than five times its goal, with generous members of the public donating a total of $54,721.89 (that’s 5,472,189 pennies).

“Over the years, we’ve helped raise more than a quarter of a million dollars for Arizona’s Children Association with the support of our listeners and sponsors,” Buzz Jackson, the program director at KIIM, said in a statement. “What’s amazing about the funds raised during the Penny Pitch is that 100% of those proceeds are used for unexpected expenses AZCA families face throughout the year.”
