Radio One Blows Up BOOM In Houston

Back on November 3, Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins said about the Classic Hip Hop format BOOM, “We invented the format and we’re the first to exit the format. It is not a sustainable long-term ratings-getter.” Thursday night, Radio One’s Houston market blew up its BOOM format, after two years, for Top 40.

Boom was the format Radio One flipped to when it ended its all-news format in Houston. The company had high hopes for the format and launched it in many of its other markets.

The new station is called “92.1 Radio Now,” and will feature artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Chainsmokers, and others. It all kicks of with 92 hours of commercial-free music. Radio One’s Senior Vice President of Programming, Jay Stevens said, “We’re excited about this opportunity to bring a fresh innovative approach to Top 40 radio in H-Town.”

  1. My radio STAYED LOCKED on 92.1 when I got in the car today, I was like what is this!! Then I decided to go online to see what happened smh.. Was looking forward to the next concert been to the first and second. WE WANT THE BOOM BACK, Was definitely looking forward to the BOOM BASH #3 OLD SCHOOL MUSIC IS WHAT WE WANT….

  2. We don’t want another top 40 station. We want a classic hip hop diverse station. This sucks. Try again Radio None! I’m pissed.

  3. Was this flip a result of massive research, audience feedback and expert internal consultations or did they just throw darts?
Perhaps they went online to find an extra special format.
Are they also going to eradicate the staff because they no longer “fit”?
None of this is “pro” behaviour.

  4. Nothing Fresh or Innovative about this approach. It’s stale bullshit. I’m guessing ijustgothit.com and brownstone dental wasn’t enough ad revenue to keep them in business.
