William (Bill) Shearer, a member of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) Board of Directors in the 1980s and 90s, passed away November 1 after a lengthy illness. During his NABOB Board tenure, Shearer was the General Manager and then eventual owner of KGFJ-AM in Los Angeles. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Shearer was a graduate of the University of San Francisco. He was a Korean War Veteran who served for over 20 years in the United States Army. Over nearly four decades, he held sales, executive, and ownership positions at several radio stations, including KLOS, KAGB, KACE, KGFJ/KUTE, and KGFJ.
Jim Winston, President of NABOB said, “Bill was an active and dedicated member of NABOB for many years. He had a great knowledge of the broadcast industry, and I relied upon him frequently. Bill always had a quick wit and could be counted on to keep any meeting on a positive and productive track. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues.”
A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, November 15, at First AME Church, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd., Los Angeles.
