In 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted of the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. He has always said he was innocent. All his appeals failed. Forbes reports Baltimore judge Martin Welch vacated Syed’s conviction and acknowledged the role the podcast played in putting the spotlight on this case.
Judge Welch said, “Serial has attracted millions of active listeners worldwide and inspired many, through social media to support or advocate against Petitioner’s request for post-conviction relief. He added that the court used its “best efforts” to address the merits of Syed’s petition “unfettered by sympathy, prejudice, or public opinion.”
Welch vacated Syed’s conviction, stating Syed’s attorney had fallen“below the standard of professional judgment” in her handling of the case.
