Pirates, KDKA Extend Agreement

MLB's Pittsburgh Pirates and KDKA-FM have agreed to a multi-year broadcast contract extension. The all-sports station will continue to be the Pirates' flagship station and broadcast 16 Spring Training games, 162 regular season games, and any post-season action.

Vertical Closes On Alpha Towers

Wireless communication company Vertical Bridge has completed the purchase of nearly 200 towers in a two-part transaction with Alpha Media. The deal included 64 sites from Alpha Media’s existing portfolio and 49 which Alpha recently acquired from Digity. How much Vertical Bridge paid for the towers was not disclosed.

Save KPLU Campaign Raises $2 Million

The Seattle non-com is crediting "overwhelming listener support" for reaching the $2 million mark in the "SAVE KPLU" campaign. Friends of 88-5 FM launched its fundraising campaign in January. The campaign needs $7 million, which matches the amount of the current offer stated in the letter of intent outlining the sale of KPLU to the UW.

Saga Declares $0.25 Per Share Cash Dividend

The Saga Communications Board of Directors approved the dividend for its Class A and Class B shares which will be paid on April 15 to shareholders of record on March 28.

Cox Closes On San Antonio Translator

The translator is K285EU, which Cox purchased from Houston Christian Broadcasters out of Houston. The price for the translator was $350,000, and Bill Whitley from Media Services Group was the broker for the seller.

Auto Sales Surge in February

Radio's biggest advertising category had another huge month. Americans bought or leased 1.34 million vehicles in February, which translates to an annual sales rate of 17.5 million. Ford sold 20.2% more new vehicles in February than a year earlier, Fiat Chrysler was up 12%, Toyota's sales rose 4.1%, Nissan posted a 10.5% increase and Honda sales jumped 12.8%. GM sales fell 1.5%. Low gas prices and 29 days in February helped fuel the strong month.
