Emmis Down To Three Markets
It was "no comment" all around following the one-paragraph note sent around to the press stating that Emmis would be exiting the St. Louis market by selling two FMs to Hubbard and two FMs to Entercom. With St. Louis coming off the board for Emmis, that would leave the company in only three markets.
Radio’s New Guy At The NAB
Earlier this week we reported that the NAB’s Executive Vice President of Radio, John David, was moving away from his day-to-day role as head of the NAB Radio Department as of next week. He'll continue to serve as a Senior Advisor to the NAB. And as the NAB reviews its organizational structure, a familiar face at the NAB will be representing radio.
Cumulus’ Day in Court Arrives
A plethora of filings, motions and orders were made on day one of Cumulus' Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceeding in front of Judge Shelley Chapman. Those documents include giving Cumulus the authority to pay its past due bills to Nielsen and continue doing business with the ratings firm. Nielsen was owed millions of dollars.
Despite Wishful Thinking…Digital Revenue Continues To Explode
So much for those who think advertisers are moving away from digital due to fraud and poor results. The Interactive Advertising Bureau announced on Wednesday that digital advertising revenues in the United States for the first half of 2017 surged to an all-time high of $40.1 billion.
Why Was Cumulus Hit With $20K FCC Fine?
It's a pretty good size fine, especially for a company that recently filed for bankruptcy. The Commission says Cumulus' cluster of five stations in Myrtle Beach has repeatedly violated a number of the Commission’s EEO rules for several years, some go back as far as 2008. The violations were found after the South Carolina cluster was randomly selected for an audit of its EEO program.
The Radio Executive of the Year

Field orchestrated one of the most successful radio mergers of all time in 2017, which helped create one of the industry's largest companies and may also have put the entire radio industry in a position to change how it's perceived by big advertisers.

How Will The Cumulus Bankruptcy Play Out?
That's the big question for about 6,000 people working for the company who've been asked to roll up their sleeves and have a business-as-usual approach to their working day. The bankruptcy filing announced by Cumulus executives last week could take up to 6 months - or longer - before a court approves the plan. Radio Ink spoke to Debtwire Legal Analyst Josh Friedman to get his expert opinion on how this bankruptcy might play out.
Cumulus Files For Chapter 11
The first big shoe has fallen. Cumulus has taken a serious step to try to restructure its $2 billion in debt by seeking protection in bankruptcy court. Since former CEO Lew Dickey was pushed out over two years ago, company executives have made it clear the debt was a major issue and they needed to get it under control. It's the first step to what may be a long process, because it appears not all lenders are on board. Here's what they've done.
U2 Launching New Album Using Alexa
The world of digital continues to edge in on radio's space. iHeartMedia has really taken advantage of the company's scale in recent years by teaming with artists, launching their new songs, and playing the daylights out of them, sometimes for an entire day at the top of every hour. Now, it's Jeff Bezos' team taking advantage of Amazon's scale, using Alexa to do the same for U2.
