“Black Thursday” At KGO In San Francisco

One of radio's iconic brands suffered another body blow Thursday. Cumulus has laid off most of the news staff at KGO and additional layoffs were made at KFOG. Cumulus has decided to take KGO in an entirely new direction, away from news. Rich Walcoff has been at KGO for nearly 32 years. He tells Radio Ink, "I Don't know the exact number but there is no more KGO news department as we knew it. KFOG also dumped a bunch of on air talent. Sad day for Bay Area radio and much fine talent."

Berner Builds Her Own Programming Team

New Cumulus CEO Mary Berner is shaking up how programming decisions are made at the company. She says she is giving PDs more control over the day-to-day programming of their stations, "which has not been the case in the past." The new structure will be built under Mike McVay and includes new hires with resumes from companies like Nielsen, iHeartMedia, CBS Radio, and Cipolla Analytics.

CBS Radio Officially Up For Sale

It's been rumored for what seems like years and Tuesday CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves officially confirmed that the company is planning to sell the CBS Radio division. Moonves said the company will explore all alternatives including a sale, a spinoff or even a swap. The Details Of A $240 Million Deal

Here are the details on the blockbuster deal announced Tuesday night. Beasley will pick up Greater Media's 21 stations in seven markets. Greater Media shareholders are expected to receive $100 million in cash and $25 million in shares of the Company’s Class A common stock (at a fixed value of $4.61 per share).

Court Chides FCC For Not Doing Its Job

The U.S. Court of Appeals chastised the FCC for not completing its 2010 quadrennial review of media ownership rules and came to the conclusion that the Commission "unreasonably delayed" action. (By John Garziglia) On July 4, PBS-affiliated television stations nationwide purported to show live fireworks from the Mall in Washington, DC, without directly informing viewers that they were instead showing “a combination of the best fireworks from this year and previous years. CES is about to begin in Las Vegas and Greater Media's Buzz Knight is there to cover the show for Radio Ink.
