Lessons Of The Vulnerable Leaders

(By Buzz Knight) In the realm of leadership, the image of a strong and unyielding figure has often been considered the gold standard. So why do I hear so much double talk from many of today’s leaders?

Coaches do it all of the time: “We just didn’t get any breaks today from the officials.” “The weather conditions made it difficult to get the offense going”

CEOs do it all of the time: “We just had another quarter of terrific performance.“ Then deeper into the call they reveal the company took a nine million dollar hit because of a bad investment.

However, a new paradigm is emerging that challenges this conventional view – the concept of vulnerability in leadership. Rather than a sign of weakness, vulnerability is increasingly recognized as a potent attribute that fosters trust, connection, and growth within teams and organizations.

As we are living in a world where the truth is mangled to serve personal interests, vulnerability is gaining traction in leadership circles because of its ability to establish trust.

Imagine if a CEO confessed on an earnings call that, “We should never have made that investment in Project X because it took our focus off of our core business,” rather than saying, “The many factors that lead to the failure of Project X were out of our control “

Wouldn’t it be refreshing to hear candor and vulnerability?

When a leader openly shares their challenges, mistakes, and uncertainties it humanizes them and makes them relatable. Employees, peers, and subordinates are more likely to trust a leader who doesn’t hide behind a facade of infallibility. This core value of authenticity creates an environment where people feel safe to express their ideas, concerns, and even failures, leading to improved communication and collaboration.

There is another important benefit of vulnerability in leadership as well. Leaders who embrace vulnerability are more likely to adopt a growth mindset, characterized by a willingness to learn and adapt.

For the many businesses stalled behind the competitive pack, isn’t that the greatest reason for leaders to embrace vulnerability?
