How Can Radio Attract More Women To The Industry?

0

Every year, Radio Ink honors radio’s most influential women in our May issue. These women spark innovation, connect with audiences, and create strategies to help our industry thrive.

This year we asked our honorees the following question:

We hear from managers and owners about the difficulty of attracting new blood into the industry. But we know radio can be a fun and rewarding career. So how do we convince and attract the next generation of broadcasters, especially women?

The answers we received were as diverse as this year’s honorees. Here’s an excerpt from WGM Radio Chicago’s VP & General Manager Mary Sandberg Boyle’s response:

“This is the best time for young women to get into the industry. There are so many amazing, talented women working in radio. If you are passionate and want to work hard, it can be a very rewarding experience. I never wanted to be behind the microphone. I found out, almost accidentally, that there were roles for creating content other than as a show host, and that’s the path that suited me.”

Mary’s story raises an important point: To attract top talent, radio must highlight all the opportunities available in the industry, not just those most visible to the public.
