When 2018 comes to a close so will the radio career of Judy Lakin. After 35 years working in three markets in the great state of Texas, Lakin is leaving CMG Houston where she’s been in sales leadership roles for the past 18 years. The radio industry is losing a sales and management star, but before she goes we were able to pick her brain on how others can become sales superstars in today’s radio industry.

Radio Ink: What would you consider your biggest accomplishment over the years?
Judy Lakin: My greatest accomplishments over the years are hiring, coaching, developing, and motivating talented teams to win in competitive markets along with developing some of the best relationships with clients in those markets.

Radio Ink:: What are the traits of a strong and successful manager in radio?
Judy Lakin: I think the traits of a successful manager are to be a leader who possesses important values and ethics. Great managers should be competitive; having a strong drive to win. Positivity, relationship-driven, along with caring are top talent competencies that help to make a great manager in broadcast.

Radio Ink: What do advertisers want from radio today?
Judy Lakin: Advertisers want analytics and research from radio. They want to know that their investment in the medium is driving sales for products and services. The good news is that radio groups are beginning to deliver this type of data.

Radio Ink: Are you still a believer in the power of radio?
Judy Lakin: I absolutely believe in the power of radio. Radio is one of the most powerful mediums, reaching 92% of adults 18+ weekly. I think we will see a renaissance in radio over the next few years.

Radio Ink: What advice do you have for sales managers?
Judy Lakin: My advice would be to help your team win by setting an example of being a great leader. Nurture your team and let them know how much you care for them. Cultivate your teams to work together by being genuine and fair to all.

Radio Ink: What advice do you have for others in the industry who want to lead salespeople?
Judy Lakin: If you’re considering sales management then have a discussion with your manager now. Ask to participate in training and mentoring opportunities outside your company. You should be a resource for your team members now to show value to others.  Be willing to help others when in need and to mentor new colleagues at work. RAB is a great resource. Reach out to RAB for online training and management certification courses.

Radio Ink: Why are you retiring?
Judy Lakin: I have had an amazing career in advertising working in Dallas, Austin, and Houston and have been blessed working with incredible colleagues and clients. I am ready for my next journey to include spending time with my husband, traveling the world, and enjoying quality time with friends.
