Berner: “I Like Fixing Things”

The Cumulus CEO was recently interviewed by WABC Radio’s Rita Cosby (WABC is owned by Cumulus). It’s been two years since Berner took over the company from Lew Dickey. In the interview, Berner details the plan she put in place to try to turn around the company, she discussed turnover, ratings growth, and revenue.

Berner also told Cosby she has a history of fixing businesses, especially businesses that have really strong core assets, which Cumulus does. “The problems were more cultural. That was something I’ve done again and again in my history. I learned how to do it because it’s so obvious. The asset you have is your employees and if your employees are engaged you’re going to have better performance. And a lot of people forget that. That was forgotten here for a long time.” Berner also tells Cosby that when she came aboard as the CEO two years ago she had to fire a culture crusher, who was a high performer. She did not name that person. She also said the turnover had reached a point where 3,000 people were leaving the company every year.
