WTOP announced it is the recipient of eight National Headliner Awards for excellence in journalism. The station took first place awards for best website for WTOP.com, for radio news series for Jamie Forzato’s Heroin Epidemic, and for online only writing by WTOP.com Sports Editor Noah Frank. Second place honors went to J.J. Green for his news series Quiet Killer, for best station newscast for the September Pope coverage,  for feature and human interest story for Canine Rehab by Nick Iannelli, and for online-only writing by WTOP.com Living Editor Rachel Nania.

The WTOP staff also won third place for its breaking news coverage of the Freddie Gray Riots.

Founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry.

WTOP Director of News and Programming Mike McMearty says, “Our newsroom takes great pride in the recognition that comes with all awards, but the National Headliners are especially gratifying because of their long history and being judged on the national level.”
