WKRZ Marks 40 years

WKRZ, Wilkes-Barre PA is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The NE Pennsylvania station is the offspring of WBRE-FM and WBRE-TV.

Former DJ, now Freelance writer, Derek Shaw, remembers when it all started for him. He joined the station on Valentine’s Day, 1981.

“My numerous air shifts were in addition to working full time as the Executive Director of Junior Achievement of Northeast Pennsylvania. I filled in whenever – weekends, week nights, afternoons, even the morning show,” recalls Shaw.

“One promotion involved listeners collecting ‘KRZ Cash’ at various advertisers throughout northeast Pennsylvania. At a later date an auction with various prizes was held. The prizes could only be obtained by using the KRZ cash a person had collected. My mug was on the blue $50 bill. I had hair and it was dark!”

As part of the celebration of their 40th anniversary, KRZ has produced a video.

“With apologies to Billy Joel, they cleverly and creatively re-wrote the lyrics to ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire.’ While there are tons of references to local stuff, both verbally and image-wise, even those not from the region will be entertained,” said Shaw
