Talking The Language Of The Pandemic

Across California farm workers are able to get COVID information in their native languages. Radio stations are translating the information into one of several indigenous languages spoken by about a third of the farm workers.

Radio Autóctona Indigenista is one of several stations that provide critical information to farm workers who speak various versions of Spanish, Mixteco, Triqui and Chatino languages.

“Some understand the basics of Spanish, but not enough to receive all the information when there is a health risk or a real emergency,” Gervacio Peña López, a co-host of one of the programs, told SFGATE.

The importance of native language broadcasts was brought to the forefront during the wildfires that scorched California last year and in 2017.
