Once again, Radio Ink is proud to spotlight some of radio’s Most Influential Women. It’s especially gratifying to note that these women of accomplishment represent only some of the many outstanding women in radio today. Thanks to advancements over the past 17 years, what began as a list of 10 is now at 100. While there is certainly more to do to level the playing field, this list indicates significant progress.
But progress does not come without change. As U.S. soccer player and two-time Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm said, “Success breeds success.” With more women of influence in the industry today, the pool of those who have the opportunity, and, dare I add, the responsibility, to set an example and to mentor and promote the next generation of broadcasters, women and men alike, has greatly expanded.
Radio Ink’s MIW list has evolved and grown in great part because those who came first paved the way for those who have followed. In 1999, it reflected women who were carving out success in what was then a male-dominated industry. While we continue to spotlight and celebrate their progress, it’s time to set a higher bar for the list, one that recognizes not only influence, but ways in which that influence is being used to help others advance.
Beginning next year, nominations to the MIW roster will include additional criteria as to how nominees are “paying it forward” as role models in developing and leading those who aspire to follow in their footsteps. An outside committee of advisers will also be named to help evaluate the nominations. Our goal is to insure that the MIW list reflects those women whose success is breeding success, who are using their influence to open doors for others. We applaud the 2016 Most Influential Women in Radio, and we look forward to encouraging and following them and their successors for many years to come.
