Yet, for all the challenges facing broadcasters, local radio still plays a significant role in the daily lives of virtually everybody in our society.

(by Ron Robinson) For those who may not have been involved at the time, it may come as somewhat of a surprise to learn that radio started down the wrong track as early as the late ‘70s and early ‘80s – years before the consolidating clown-crews floundered in with their big, red noses, fright wigs, floppy shoes, and overwhelming arrogance.

There will be a lot of translator buying and selling in the news now that the FCC has opened its window. The trustees at Indiana University have agreed to sell the construction permits for three FM Translators to non-profit Kentucky River Broadcasting for $110,000.

The station held its seventh annual “Let’s Kick Hunger Day” radiothon this past Thursday and raised over $261,901 for hunger relief, pushing the station's seven-year total raised to more than $1.4 million.

The Report and Order adopted Thursday calls for public files to be moved online immediately by stations in the top 50 markets with five or more employees. All other stations will have two years before they are required to move their public file online. The deadline to move online for stations outside the top 50 is March 1, 2018.

The FCC says the rule change adopted Thursday includes a number of measures to minimize the effort and cost associated with moving the public files online. The Commission says the online database makes these files easier to access, reducing consumer time and expense as well as the long-term costs for government and the private sector, which is you.
