Cumulus Turns In a Nice Q2

Cumulus reported total revenue of $290.5 million in the second quarter of 2017, compared to revenue of $287.2 million in 2016. Westwood One had a very strong quarter with revenue up over 6% to $81.2 million. Radio station revenue was down slightly but still outperformed the markets in which Cumulus operates. Radio station revenue was down .7% to $208.6 million. When you combine the two divisions, Cumulus was up 1.2% for the quarter.

CEO Mary Berner said the company is focused on maximizing the value of Cumulus' great collection of assets, however, she added the company's massive debt continue to be a problem. "Our heavy debt load continues to constrain both our ability to do business in the short-term and achieve our full potential in the long term."

Cumulus CEO Mary Berner said the over 6% revenue growth for the quarter at Westwood One didn't happen by accident. And while she did not mention Westwood One President Suzanne Grimes (pictured here) by name it was crystal clear she's very happy with Grimes' leadership at the network.

That's what a federal jury decided on Monday in the Taylor Swift vs. David Mueller case. The six women and two men decided that former KYGO morning man David Mueller did exactly what Swift accused him of at a 2013 pre-concert meet and greet. She was awarded a symbolic $1 in damages. The jury also found that neither Swift’s mother nor her radio promotions manager Frank Bell caused Mueller to be fired by KYGO.

GEICO Takes The Top Spot

For two weeks now, The Home Depot has really backed off on the number of commercials its been running on radio stations all over the country. With only 24,336 spots running the big box home improvement store comes in at number five on the Media Monitors weekly chart. GEICO took the top spot with 42,198 spots. McDonald's was second (27,950) followed by JC Penney (27,164) and AutoZone (27,153).
