Northwestern U & WGN Agree New Deal

Northwestern Athletics and WGN Radio AM-720 announced Friday that they have agreed on a four-year broadcast rights-holder extension. The agreement will keep Wildcats football and men’s basketball on the station through the conclusion of the 2019-20 campaign.

Radio One Radio Revenue Declines 9.1%

CEO Alfred Liggins says stronger ratings have not resulted in higher revenue as of yet and the Houston market is severely underperforming. Local radio revenue was down 8% while national was down 6.2%; and when you take a look at the Miller/Kaplan number, markets in which Radio One operates were down 2% while the company was down over 7%.

Radio Is Not A Falling Knife

Looking to put a bit of a positive spin on a bad quarter, Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins said he still has confidence in the radio business. "I love to see Entercom and iHeartMedia post good numbers. That gives me confidence in the business. I feel good about the long-term health of the industry." Liggins said this performance is an issue specific to Radio One. "We're not doing a good job right now. (Radio division CEO) David Kantor and I speak about it every day and we will fix this."

Nets, CBS Extend Partnership

The NBA's Brooklyn Nets and CBS Radio have reached an agreement to extend their broadcast rights partnership. The length of the extension was not disclosed, other than it's a new multi-year deal. WFAN-AM/FM will continue as the team’s flagship radio station, a partnership that has been in place since the 2004-05 season. CBS Newsradio 880, the team’s secondary broadcast outlet, will provide game coverage of select matchups.

O’Reilly: Tell Me What You Need

FCC Commissioner Michael O'Rielly spoke before the National Association of Broadcasters State Leadership Conference this week where he repeated something he's been telling broadcasters a lot lately; "I seek your assistance." O'Rielly told broadcasters the Commission needs their input on ways to reduce specific burdens the government has imposed on them that are no longer necessary or relevant in the current market environment.

“Pirate’s Expanding at an Alarming Rate”

That was a big concern for broadcasters when the FCC cut back on the number of field offices last year. And, O'Reilly's comments at the NAB Leadership Conference probably didn't make them feel any better about the Pirate Radio issue. O'Reilly said Pirates are eating away at legitimate stations and the principle that all licensed spectrum must be protected, regardless of who is interfering, or why.

Nielsen’s Post-Holiday Ratings Report

Now that the Holiday season is several months behind us, Nielsen has had a chance to analyze listening trends of formats that are affected by the disruption of stations that flip to holiday music. Nielsen says traditionally, January marks the beginning of seasonal spikes for both the Sports and News/Talk formats, while the major music formats look to reset.

Big Gains For Mexican Regional Format

It's the most listened-to Spanish-language format in America, and according to the Nielsen study just released, it continues to gain in popularity. Mexican Regional's January results were the best in several years, with general-market shares climbing between 14% and 15% from the holiday period to January across the board.

Joe Schwartz Resigns From Cherry Creek Radio

After 38 years in the radio business, and 14 with the company he started, Cherry Creek Radio, Joe Schwartz has resigned from the company, effective immediately. Schwartz tells Radio Ink it was just the right time to step away. Schwartz founded the company in 2004 with the purchase of Commonwealth Communications, which had 24 stations in nine markets. Today, Cherry Creek has 54 stations in 11 markets.
