On Wednesday we told you about a story Rolling Stone published regarding Payola. The magazine cited radio and record industry sources who claim the illegal act of paying DJ's money to air songs was still running rampant in radio. After we ran the story, we received an interesting phone call.

Back in May, Entercom CEO David Field sounded optimistic about business in the second quarter. He said the company was pacing in the low single digits. When he gave that assessment, April was already in the books and it finished strong.

Entercom Buys Two Podcasting Companies

Entercom has acquired Cadence13 and Pineapple Street Media. Entercom had a 45% stake in Cadence13 before buying the rest of the company. Nick Quah is reporting that Entercom will pay $18 million for Pineapple and another $50 million for the balance Cadence13.

Rolling Stone has published a very lengthy piece that will surely have radio managers thinking. The magazine quotes several radio and record label sources that claim, even today, money is still being paid illegally to get artists played on the radio. Here are a few excerpts from the article...

And the company continues to lead the way on the digital front. In Q2, Townsquare's net revenue increased 5.3%, to $113.1 million. Excluding political revenue, which declined approximately $800 thousand from 2018, net revenue increased 6.2%.

Saga Q2 Revenue Down Slightly

Saga's Q2 net revenue decreased $1.2 million to $31.1 million, from $32.2 million in 2018. Political played a role in the decrease. In 2018 Saga took in $510,000 in political revenue. In Q2 of 2019 political revenue was only $195,000.
