Philadelphia radio host Andre Gardner stunned fans on Friday by announcing that he had been laid off from 102.9 WMGK, ending his 22-year tenure at the classic rock station. Gardner shared the news on social media, citing budget cuts by Beasley Media Group.
Beasley did allow Gardner to have one final “goodbye” show, where he reflected on his career. He last signed a multi-year deal with WMGK in April 2023. Gardner is also known for the syndicated Breakfast With The Beatles, which ended in 2022.
In his post, he cited revenue challenges affecting everyone from iHeart to Audacy. Gardner credited Buzz Knight for bringing him to MGK in 2002 after his career took him to Trenton, Dallas, Atlanta, and New York.
Gardner stated, “I want to thank Market Manager Paul Blake and our PD Eric Johnson for gifting me a true rarity in this business – the chance to say goodbye on the air this afternoon. I will be forever grateful.”
“It has been a dream come true for me to be your afternoon host on MGK lo these many years. The experiences and memories I’ve had, and the men and women I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with, has been an incredible honor, a great privilege, and a hell of a lot of fun.”
Listeners and radio personalities expressed their shock at the quick move. Fellow Beasley Philly morning host John Kincade commented on Gardner’s post, saying, “What a class act and many blessings in the future.” A listener reacted, “It was ALWAYS about the music with you; such a rare thing in this world. Best wishes on future endeavors.”
WMGK hasn’t announced its future plans for the afternoon slot. Gardner remains uncertain about his next steps. “From the bottom of my heart, thank YOU for hanging with me and being on the other end of the speakers or earbuds. I’ve loved every minute of it,” he commented.
