St. Petersburg Radio Station Gets Its First Studio In Ten Years

After a decade of operating without a permanent base, Florida’s Radio St. Pete has finally established a physical studio. The nonprofit station has moved into a co-working center in downtown St. Petersburg, which will host the broadcast space for Sunshine 96.7 (WMTB-LP).

Radio St. Pete, which went online in 2013, obtained an FM license for Sunshine 96.7 in 2021 from the Federal Communications Commission. Programming includes bay area musicians’ recordings, live broadcasts, podcasts, interviews, news, and sports, supported by four separate online streams.

The transition marks a new chapter for the station, previously known for its dispersed remote “studios” across the city. A private ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to celebrate the opening of the new studio, along with two days of live local music as fundraisers.

Station founder told the St. Pete Catalyst, “I think this brings home, for the first time, that we are trying to become a very relevant media platform, if you will, in St. Pete. And in the first couple of weeks, the availability and convenience of the studio has made it possible for us to record and broadcast probably 20 interviews already, with people in the arts, business, and local government. Clearly, this is going to make a huge difference for us.

“In addition to all of the content that’s being created, the studio will also be available for live-hosted music programs. That will probably start relatively soon. We’re still really at that phase of trying to gain awareness, make people know that we’re out there – to give us a try and check out our program schedule. Which is pretty robust.”
