Salem Media Group has announced an agreement to sell Regnery Publishing to Skyhorse Publishing, anticipated to be finalized by the end of the year. Terms and price of the deal were not released. This is Salem’s second major division divestment, following the $30 million sale of Salem Church Products to Gloo, LLC in October. Salem purchased Regnery in 2014 with the purchase of Eagle Publishing.
Regnery Publishing has published a range of influential Conservative authors including former President Donald Trump, Senator Rand Paul, and Ann Coulter. These titles, along with the entire catalog of over 1,500 Regnery books, will now be incorporated into the Skyhorse Publishing library. Skyhorse, founded in 2006 by Tony Lyons, is one of the largest independent book publishers in the United States.
Salem’s publishing division, which includes Regnery and the self-publishing Salem Author Services, experienced a challenging third quarter, with sales plummeting 17.5% to $4.6 million, down from $5.5 million in the same period in 2022. Of that dip, Regnery was responsible for the most significant losses, taking significant drop of 19.2%, reaching $2.6 million. The publishing house is likely to carry a Q4 boost, with the early November release of Senator Ted Cruz’s Unwoke.
Lyons commented, “We are so pleased to acquire this legendary publishing company, founded over 75 years ago, and are committed to building on the strong foundation that the Regnery staff has developed. We see a lot of synergies and opportunities for growth and will work hard to promote, market, and sell the books we have acquired and those that are pending, as well as to develop and pursue exciting new projects. Regnery will be an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing and will maintain its own identity.”
