Veteran Engineer Jack Sellmeyer Dead At 82

The radio engineering community is mourning the loss of Jack Sellmeyer, who passed away on November 2. Sellmeyer’s experience spanned a range of roles from a station engineer to a manufacturing engineer in the broadcast equipment industry and as a consultant.

His journey began at the age of 15 at KPBM in Carlsbad, NM, where his dedication and persistence led him to construct audio consoles, wire audio gear, and undertake numerous projects that have been foundational to his learning and contribution to the field. During his tenure at various stations, Sellmeyer not only took on engineering responsibilities but also engaged in innovative projects that included building a remote studio in a van and developing broadcast-quality remote pickup systems, significantly contributing to station revenues.

Sellmeyer’s career highlights include developing new facilities and transmitter systems, assisting with military communications, and playing a pivotal role in product support for Collins Radio. His expertise was instrumental in developing technology that corrected frequency stability issues and advanced FM amplifiers.

Upon the closure of Collins Radio, Sellmeyer established his own consulting firm.

In recognition of his achievements, Sellmeyer was honored with the NAB Radio Engineering Achievement Award in 2009 and the first Texas Association of Broadcasters George Marti Award for Engineering Excellence in 2014.
