iHeart Detroit Collects 120 Tons Of Water

Kudos to iHeartMedia in Detroit. But after all, isn’t this is what local radio is all about? In under 36 hours, and with help from all the iHeartMedia radio stations, WNIC-FM’s Jay Towers in the Morning started a water drive to help address the Flint, MI, water crisis. Towers asked the community to donate bottled water at the Kroger’s grocery store. Kroger supplied the trucks that would transport the water to Flint later in afternoon. The Absopure water company offered to match every case of water collected. In one day, 120 tons of water was collected filling five semi-trucks for Flint. With the match from the water company, 240 tons of water were sent to Flint. Well done iHeart Detroit!

The Flint water crisis.
The state decided to temporarily switch Flint’s water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River as a cost-saving measure until a new supply line to Lake Huron was ready. The river had a reputation for nastiness, and after the April 2014 switch, residents complained their water looked, smelled, and tasted funny. The city switched back to the Lake Huron water supply in October, but the damage was already done to the lead pipes. The state is now handing out filters and bottled water with the National Guard.
