But it wasn’t until a devastating flood hit our rural Missouri town and the surrounding area last year that we experienced firsthand the real importance of getting the FM chip activated.

The radio industry might be smart to re-activate a lobbying effort to get the government to mandate FM Chips in all cell-phones using the natural disaster angle. This year has been especially strong when it comes to Hurricanes (See Puerto Rico. See Southwest Florida. See Houston) and talk about activating the FM Chip, which is already in all cell-phones, has never been higher.

Sun Sentinel Slams Apple Over FM Chip

As residents of South Florida recover from Hurricane Irma The Sun Sentinel has published an editorial that the radio industry is going to love. The paper is calling on Apple CEO Tim Cook to activate the FM Chips that are inside Apple's iPhones. The paper said Apple’s resistance on this issue is unacceptable.

NAB Pushes FM Chip Activation With FCC

Radio's lobbying arm has found a way to get the FM Chip in front of the FCC Commissioners once again. This time it's in a joint-filing with NPR. The FCC is seeking input on how to improve the Wireless Emergency Alert service, which notifies Americans, via text message, during times of emergency. The NAB says many times the alert tells residents to get in their car and turn on their radios for more information. The two organizations argue that one way to improve upon emergency notification is to have all FM Chips in cell phones activated.

He also owns radio stations in Hawaii and was part of an NAB panel Thursday about the role broadcasters play in times of emergency. Leonard was just waking up when the alert that Hawaii was about to be hit by an incoming ballistic missile came in on his phone.
