Turkeys Away! Radio Keeps Families Fed This Thanksgiving

While WKRP might be the first station that most associate with turkeys, radio stations across the country spent Thanksgiving week out in their communities making sure everyone had a holiday meal. Here are three that passed across the Radio Ink news desk for our 2023 Season of Giving Tally:

CMG Atlanta Makes Giving Fowl Fair

Cox Media Group Atlanta held its fifth annual KISS 104.1 (WALR) Turkey Giveaway on Saturday, November 18, providing free turkeys to 208 families in need within under-served communities in DeKalb County. Families receiving these turkeys were identified by non-profit organization CHRIS 180.

CHRIS 180 CMO Chaundra Luckett said, “With the rising prices in every area of our lives, many families who were on the brink are struggling to make ends meet, and things like Thanksgiving dinner can quickly become non-essential. Thanks to the generosity of our partners, over 200 families in DeKalb County will have one less worry this holiday.”

WALR Director of Branding and Programming Terri Avery commented, “Being live and local for WALR means serving our community. We are thankful to another successful year to help families in need.”

No Run Of ‘The Mill’ Turkey Drive

Saga Communications’ Manchester Radio Group in New Hampshire held “Tons of Turkeys” on 96.5 The Mill (WMLL) Held at six different supermarkets across southern New Hampshire, this year’s drive collected 16.93 tons of turkeys benefiting the New Hampshire Foodbank.

“Tons of Turkeys” also involves cash donations, all aimed at providing food to families across the state. Since its inception in 2003, the partnership between Hannaford Supermarkets and 96.5 The Mill has succeeded in gathering nearly 400 tons of turkeys.

Manchester Radio Group GM Lucy Lange said, “It is wonderful to see our community step up to support each other. This year’s donations represent a 36% increase over last year! We all should be thankful for the generosity of our neighbors.”

Davis Broadcasting Lands All The Trimmings

Davis Broadcasting Columbus, GA once again made an impact in its Alabama/Georgia community with their “Beans, Greens, Potatoes, Onions, and Turkey Giveaway.” The event took place on Tuesday, November 21 and gave out Thanksgiving baskets to 250 families on a first-come, first-served basis.

Promotions Director Karen Robinson stated, “What’s a turkey without the sides? The Davis Broadcasting’s 18th Annual Turkey Giveaway included collard greens, green beans, potatoes, onions, and of course the star of the show – a turkey. We hope to continue our mission of being ‘in the community and about the community’ by providing 250 meals, just over 6000 pounds of food, to support the community that supports us.”

With the delicious contributions of these stations, Radio Ink‘s latest 2023 Season of Giving Tally is $5.21 million. Help us show how radio matters to local communities! Submit your station’s good works to our Online Editor Cameron Coats between now and the end of the year.
