Preserve Local Journalism

Warning that “The economic foundation of local journalism is under assault,” National Association of Broadcasters President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt has authored an op-ed in The Hill this week calling for the passage of the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA). The bipartisan bill would help ensure local news outlets receive fair compensation from the Big Tech platforms for use of their original content.

The JCPA would focus on the dominant platforms like Facebook and Google; that control access to trustworthy news online and don’t pay most news publishers for use of local news content on their platforms.

According to LeGeyt-“News outlets have almost no leverage when dealing with tech giants regarding the terms for how online content is compensated or displayed on these platforms.”

LeGeyt references a Recent National Survey that found three-fourths of Americans believe Big Tech companies are driving small and local news outlets out of business, and four out of five Americans support Congress taking steps to give small and local publishers more parity with Big Tech companies during negotiations over the use of their content.

The NAB and News Media Alliance has launched a co-branded Call To Action Website where individuals can contact their members of Congress to ask them to support fair compensation for news outlets by supporting the JCPA.
