(By Randy Lane) What causes top radio shows to fall into decline after years of rating dominance? The combination of complacency and new competition is almost always the two-pronged reason. The mindset is typically, “Let’s keep doing what we’re doing. After all, it got us to the top.” Until it doesn’t. And ratings begin to fall. Do you have a comeback plan?

(By Bob McCurdy) Several weeks ago I wrote a blog about a chance meeting I had with an agency CEO and our subsequent discussion regarding radio accountability and analytics. I had a follow-up meeting with this individual and his team along with my attribution provider, Analytic Owl, late last week. It was spirited and productive on a number of different levels.

Entercom has partnered with the Travis Manion Foundation’s Operation Legacy Service Project in Abington, PA, to renovate the home of Iraqi War veteran, Matthew Renner. Each April and November, the Travis Manion Foundation organizes Operation Legacy Service Projects, which unites communities for a common cause through volunteer-led service opportunities. 

99.7 Canton’s New Country also has a new Program Director. Scott Davidson has been named to the role and will double up on the job with My 101.7, The 80s and More. Davidson most recently served as morning show host on 101.7, and has held several programming positions throughout his career.

All three are at 103.7 WSOC-FM in Charlotte, NC. Jack Daniel has been named PD at WSOC-FM and 94.7 SMOKE. He will continue in his role as the afternoon on-air personality on K 104.7 in Charlotte. Philip Tabakelis, a.k.a. “Big Sexy” has been named APD for 103.7 FM. And Mimi Wheeler has added the title of Music Director to her duties at WSOC.

Chris Eagan has been promoted to Senior Director of Operations for Cox Media Group Atlanta. Eagan will oversee programming for B98.5 (WSB-FM), 97-1 The River (WSRV-FM), and Kiss 104.1 (WALR-FM), and have continued responsibility for radio promotions and digital content, as well as commercial production in the Atlanta market

Bob Day was a fixture on the Central Pennsylvania airwaves for over 50 years, making him an iconic broadcaster in the region. He passed away on October 18.

Mike Flanagan, Program Director of Colorado Public Radio’s OpenAir, announced that he will retire on October 31. Flanagan’s career in radio has spanned over 50 years, including nearly 15 years at CPR, first as a classical music host in the 1990s and then in his current role as OpenAir PD.
