Carter Alan is saying goodbye after 47 years in Boston radio. The midday host on iHeartMedia’s WZLX joined The Chuck Nowlin Morning Show earlier Monday to announce his decision to retire, with a farewell broadcast set for later this year.

His career began at the former WBCN, where he spent 19 years as a DJ and music director, and is credited with helping introduce U2 to American radio in 1980 by playing “I Will Follow” on air. Alan joined WZLX in 1998 and has served as Assistant Program Director and midday host over his 28 years at the station.

Alan’s final show is set for December 18. Chris Tyler, WZLX Program Director and co-host of The Chuck Nowlin Morning Show, will take over middays. WZLX will air a special retrospective featuring highlights from the audio and photo archives, with additional content on the station’s social media accounts.

Alan said, “After 47 remarkable years in Boston radio at WZLX and WBCN, it’s time for my boot heels to be wanderin’! What an endless parade of friends, characters, stars and hopefuls; I’ve met and interviewed seemingly everyone.”

Tyler stated, “Working with Carter for the past decade has been one of the highlights of my career. He’s a legendary talent, and an even better human being. It’s been a true honor.”
