A quarter century after September 11, the NYC crew that captured the attacks live from a traffic helicopter is telling their story for radio. Any Other Tuesday: Reporting On 9/11 From The Air revisits their real-time coverage and the friendships forged that morning.
The special is divided into two one-hour programs. The first reconstructs the experiences of pilot Arthur Anderson and reporters Tom Kaminski (WCBS-AM) and Brian McKinley (WBBR-AM, WABC-TV) on 9/11 in near real time. The second features a 25th anniversary conversation about their teamwork, the coverage, and its lasting legacy.
The special includes additional voices from that day’s coverage.
Michael Dillon spent 53 years in New York City aviation and electronic news gathering, serving as a pilot for nearly all of the city’s major news helicopters, as well as chief mechanic and manager of Helicopters Inc.’s New York branch. Mark Leonard was a New York City traffic reporter for nearly 25 years. He was heard on WBBR-AM as Jack Austin, on WCBS-AM under his own name, and on WINS-AM as Ken Daniels. Leonard was also the in-studio traffic anchor for WBBR-AM’s morning drive on September 11.
Andrew Schmertz hosts Any Other Tuesday, which is produced by McKinley and SueMedia Productions’ Sue Zizza.
In the tri-state area, Hofstra University’s WRHU and Montclair State University’s WMSC will air both hours beginning at 7a ET on September 11.
