Triton Digital’s Q2 2026 US Podcast Ranker shows News posting the sharpest reach growth of any genre ahead of the midterms, even as Comedy widens its already-controlling lead, driven partly by late-night television shows increasingly moving into audio.
The iHeart Audience Network, Audioboom, and Cumulus Podcast Network ranked as the top sales networks by average weekly downloads.
Triton found News podcast listening up 8.4% to 25.7%, as midterm elections approach and personality-led political shows draw new listeners. Political programming saw some of the quarter’s biggest individual moves. The Rachel Maddow Show jumped 66 spots to number 35, The Tucker Carlson Show rose from number 19 to number nine, and The Dan Bongino Show climbed 16 spots to number 50, ahead of his return to terrestrial radio.
Triton Digital SVP of Measurement Products and Strategy Daryl Battaglia said, “We expect to see a continued uptick in political and news podcasts through Q3. Campaigns are increasing ad spend to reach voters across every medium this year, and podcasting is emerging as one of the most effective ways, as these audiences are actively seeking out long-form political conversation.”
Even still, Comedy remains the largest single category, accounting for 57 of the top 200 podcasts, a 29% share. Triton credited much of that strength to debuts from Late Night with Seth Meyers Podcast and The Late Show Pod Show with Stephen Colbert, along with the return of The Daily Show: Ears Edition. Stand-up-driven shows also grew, with debuts from Whiskey Ginger with Andrew Santino and The Adam Friedland Show.
As Radio Ink reported in May, Comedy, News and Society & Culture have held the top three spots in Triton’s rankings throughout 2026. That held true again in Q2, with Comedy at 44.5% reach, News at 25.7% and Society & Culture at 21.2%. True Crime and Sports also posted gains, rising 1.8% to 17.1% and 1.1% to 18.5%, respectively.
