Massachusetts AM Mourns The Loss Of ‘Happy Hec’ At 80

Fall River, Massachusetts’ WSAR-AM is mourning beloved local personality, Hector Gauthier, known on-air as Happy Hec, after his passing following a brief illness. Gauthier spent 40 years broadcasting in the region, most recently hosting the Bristol County Breakfast Club.

Gauthier, also WSAR’s senior account executive, is remembered for his problem-solving skills and his constant presence at the station. His broadcasting journey began at WALE-AM in Fall River, followed by a stint in New London, CT, before returning to Fall River when the Karam brothers acquired WSAR.

He held various key roles at the AM, including program director, general manager, news reporter, production director, account executive, and copywriter. In 2000, he was named Radio Broadcaster of the Year by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association. Gauthier was also known for his significant community involvement, being named “Man of the Year” by the March of Dimes and “Friend of Education” by the Fall River Educational Association.

Gauthier’s dedication to the community was further evident through his service on the Board of Directors for the Fall River Chamber of Commerce and the Boy Scouts of America, showcasing his broad impact both in media and community service.
