Charlie Cook Reflects On CRS 2023

With Country Radio Seminar 2023 wrapped up, many in the industry are returning home with fresh ideas and inspiration from the sessions, talks, and shows. Radio Ink asked one of our Best Program Directors in Country Radio award winners, Charlie Cook, about his biggest takeaways from this year’s CRS. Cook is Cumulus Media’s VP of Country and PD of WKDF and WSM-FM in Nashville.

“I think the headline is frankly that the Country Radio Broadcasters pulled off another great seminar. The amazing partnership between the record industry and the radio industry continues year after year,” Cook answered. “I know the financial requirements to make this work and I think it’s amazing that CRB can continue to provide first-class information, entertainment, and network opportunities.”

Of course, one of the best parts of CRS is how the artists interact with broadcasters and are honest about the impact and importance radio has for them. One of these interactions came during Kenny Chesney’s candid session with Country Countdown USA‘s Lon Helton on Tuesday.

Cook commented, “I thought the Kenny Chesney interview gave us a perspective into a superstar career that spans over 30 years. When we see a star like Kenny sell out concerts and provide radio with first-class music today, we forget the struggle that went into making all of that happen. I thought Lon Helton tapped into what it takes to become a star. And I believe everyone feels a little closer to Kenny, though that’s almost impossible with how much time he spent building a relationship with radio.”
