AI Joins Humans For WFMU Stream

WFMU has launched its Rock ’n’ Soul Radio Stream with a unique combination of AI based, upbeat DJ entities and human DJs. The stream features rock ‘n’ roll and soul music from the 1950s through modern day.

The AI radio entity concept was created by Dave Amels (WFMU’s DA the DJ) several years ago. Two different AI personalities have been created: “The Bunny,” which is an AM radio styled DJ and “Owl Sun,” an overnight DJ based on the late great Allison Steele.

The Host AI DJs take phone, text, and chat board requests, picks songs on-the-fly, do weather, and keeps the chat board cheerful with conversation.

“I had reservations about having an unattended AI manage the chat board, but they turned out to be unfounded as people seemed genuinely appreciative for the positive messages sent to them,” said Ken Freedman, Station Manager.

Human DJs on the Rock ’n’ Soul Radio Stream include: Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, long-time WFMU DJ Terre T, and Andrew Sandoval (Rhino / Monkees).
