KSL Works To Heal The Community

Bonneville’s KSL Radio in Salt Lake City ran an entire day of special programming Thursday dedicated to race relations in Utah. The station partnered with Weber State University’s diversity office. KSL GM Tanya Vea said, “This is a terrific opportunity for listening, and to challenge our thinking and the perceptions we have about race.”

KSL began coverage with stories and in-depth reporting during Utah’s Morning News.  It continued with four hours of uninterrupted coverage including four different talk shows from 10:00am – 2:00pm.

That midday coverage included a one-hour noon special with afternoon host Jeff Caplan and Deseret News newspaper journalist and podcaster Jasen Lee.  At noon, Jeff and Jasen were joined by Weber State associate professor Monica Williams and former Salt Lake City police chief Chris Burbank to discuss policing.

During the second half of the program they talked with James Jackson III with the Utah Black Chamber of Commerce and diversity consultant Sara Jones. They explored the difficulties of running a business, hiring and getting credit as a black business owner – and the everyday tensions and racism that can occur in a workplace with minority employees.
