In addition to being America’s top billing radio station four years running, for the third year in a row, Hubbard’s WTOP-FM in Washington, D.C., won the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in large market radio.

“Our news team places a high value on consistency, innovation, and collaboration across all platforms,” said Mike McMearty, WTOP’s Director of News and Programming. “To be recognized three years in-a-row by the Murrow judges fills us all with such a great sense of pride… it’s truly a great honor.”

Vermont Public Radio clinched the spot for small market radio.

There were 4,600 entries this year. The RTNDA recognized 100 local and network radio, television, and digital news organizations for 122 examples of outstanding journalism in 16 categories.

Taking home the most national awards this year is CBS News, with an Overall Excellence award in the Network Radio category, and seven wins across radio for Breaking News Coverage and Newscast, and, in network television, Excellence in Writing, Feature Reporting, Hard News, Investigative Reporting, and News Documentary.

Five student news organizations from four schools have earned Student Murrow Awards this year, including USC Annenberg Media in the Audio and Video Newscast categories, Montclair State University for Video Reporting, News21 — Walter Cronkite School of Journalism for Digital Reporting, and Elissa Candiotti of NCC News — Syracuse University for Audio Reporting. The students covered important stories, including the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, the Thousand Oaks shooting, racism and hate crimes, and California wildfires.

The national awards will be presented October 14, 2019, at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City.
