Chicago radio icon John Records Landecker, who has lived in northwest Indiana for the past 15 years, was honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash award, September 8, ahead of his induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame, according to heraldargus.com. Landecker starred on stations WLS, WLUP and others for decades, and he continues to broadcast with Mike Dempsey on WEFM on Fridays. His distinctive middle name was his mother’s maiden name.

“With John, what you see is what you get,” said long-time fan, friend, and co-worker Rick Kaempfer of Chicago. “For my generation of radio fans, there was no bigger star than John Records Landecker. From the very first day, he treated me as an equal, which I certainly was not.”

“To me, this honor is not about what I have done for Indiana, but what Indiana has done for me — and is still doing,” said the ever-humble Landecker.

Landecker is scheduled for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame on November 2 at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago.
