Will Mike & Mike Last Until December?

That’s when the ESPN Radio duo is expected to end their nearly two decade morning radio run with Greenberg heading to TV and Trey Wingo set to take to the lead radio role. Sports Illustrated is reporting that several ESPN staffers are saying the two hosts do not even talk to each other any longer once the mic is off.

Here’s some of the gossip being reported by leakers at ESPN. “It’s really a poisonous atmosphere right now. Most of us don’t see the show lasting through its contractual end,” one staffer told SI. The magazine speculates that Greenberg’s new multi-million dollar contract on the TV side is part of the reason these grown men are no longer talking to each other.

Mike & Mike have only spoken on the air very briefly about the upcoming change, although Greenberg moving to TV was the worst kept secret at ESPN. The story is sure getting a lot of play outside the network, especially the idea that the two men are no longer talking to each other. Even other sports stations are talking about it and writing about it.

Two decades together, four hours every day, on a network that started, in its early days, with very few listeners is still quite an accomplishment, and nothing lasts forever.
