According to the 2017 Infinite Dial Study, 82% of the U.S. population listens to AM/FM radio every month in their vehicles. CDs are next at 52%, digital music is at 45%, and online radio, which includes streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify, lags way behind at 26%.

Even satellite radio is dwarfed by AM/FM radio, coming in at 22%. Despite the big lead over all the other sources, AM/FM radio was off 2% from 2016 and 4% from 2014. Owned digital music was up big from 2014 (31%) to 2017 (45%), and online radio has grown as well, jumping from 14% in 2014 to 26% in 2017.

So what do U.S. consumers use “most of the time” when they are in their vehicle? Forty-seven percent say they listen to AM/FM radio most of the time, while 13% listen to satellite radio most of the time and 11% listen to online radio most of the time.
