From heritage signals in the top 20 to thriving stations in midsize to small markets, these properties are healthy and generating revenue. Now, as even cautious investors are considering making some offers, what are the backers thinking? Are the financial institutions and lenders ready to re-embrace radio? scott-flickScott Flick is a partner in Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP’s Communications practice located in its Washington, DC office. He has handled over $30 billion in media-related mergers and acquisitions and provides strategic counsel to media, programming, telecommunications, and technology clients on transactional, regulatory, business, litigation, policy, and intellectual property matters. Flick’s practice includes broadcast TV and radio stations, broadcast and cable networks, cable and satellite TV, Internet, media technologies, advertising, and program production and distribution matters. He obtains changes in federal law and policy on behalf of clients, structures ventures for acquisitions and operations within the current regulatory framework, and advises media and technology investors. Flick has successfully litigated numerous precedent-setting cases, including matters related to cable program carriage and retransmission.

tom-buonoTom Buono is the founder of BIA Financial Network and CEO of BIA/Kelsey. Since founding BIA Financial Network in 1983, Buono has overseen its acquisitions and growth into a diversified strategic and financial consulting and information firm and has been involved in the creation and management of BIA Capital Strategies, LLC, a communications industry investment bank; BIA Digital Partners LP, a mezzanine investment fund; and, most recently, BIA/Kelsey, to offer data, research, and services that provide an expanded and comprehensive view of the local media and advertising sector. Over the course of his career, Buono has been involved in the valuation of billions of dollars worth of communications properties, has spoken on panels for virtually all the major communications industry trade associations, and has testified as a valuation expert in many communications disputes and before Congress. He has also been a principal in a venture capital firm, the president of a paging and SMR business, and the partial owner of a number of radio stations. He is often quoted in trade publications, business magazines and national newspapers.

burnsArthur Burns leads the national media and communications corporate finance coverage effort for Citizens Capital Markets and has been involved with the media and communications industries his entire career. After graduating from Fairfield University he worked at Capital Cities/ABC Radio for two years before attending business school at New York University. Upon graduation he started a career in finance covering the media and communications industries that has spanned multiple roles, including equity research and equity capital markets, leveraged finance, and corporate finance.

bill-fanningBill Fanning is a managing director at MVP Capital, having joined the firm in 2006. He is one of the heads of the Media group and also has experience and expertise in the company╒s telecom (specifically fiber) practice. Since 2012, the Media Group has successfully closed deals with a total transaction volume exceeding $650 million. Prior to MVP, Fanning worked as an associate in Bank of America’s Global Corporate & Investment Bank, where he was involved in a $21 billion leveraged buyout. He has successfully passed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst program and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2006. He also received a B.S. in Finance, magna cum laude, from Boston College.

drewDrew Marcus is managing partner and portfolio manager of Sugarloaf Rock Capital, LLC, which was founded in 2009. Sugarloaf Rock invests in companies in the technology/media/telecom sectors, with an emphasis on media. Marcus was vice chairman of global banking at Deutsche Bank, focusing on media and telecommunications, from 2005-2008; before that he was managing director, global head of media research and senior media analyst. During his 23 years as an analyst, Marcus covered the radio and TV broadcasting, outdoor, entertainment, and publishing sectors. He has been ranked as the number one broadcasting analyst in surveys conducted by Institutional Investor and the Wall Street Journal. In addition, he is an eight-time Institutional Investor “All American” and a six-time Wall Street Journal “Master Stock Picker.”
