Any Program Director who has fielded angry calls after a morning show shakeup will recognize the latest podcast research. The Podcast Study 2026 finds audiences tune in for the host, forgive a vacation, but would consider walking away if that voice left for good.
Strategic Solutions Research and Point-To-Point Marketing surveyed 1,205 podcast consumers ages 18 to 54 who listen at least monthly. Crooked Media, NPR, and PRX co-sponsored the study, which is being released through a series of free webinars, starting with “The Importance of the Host & The Power of Trust.”
Among the 1,104 Podcast Study respondents with a favorite podcast, 82% say the host is a big part of (61%) or the only reason for (21%) their listening. Nearly nine in ten (88%) spend at least half of their podcast time with that favorite show.
One in five (20%) would definitely stop listening if their favorite host left, and another 36% would consider stopping, while 37% would wait and see and 7% say it would have no impact. A vacation is a different story, with 78% saying they would still listen often (30%) or sometimes (48%) while the host is away.
After a host endorsement, 57% say they are more likely to remember the brand, 55% are more likely to notice the ad again, 44% are more likely to trust the ad, and 41% are more likely to consider buying. Asked about likelihood to try or buy, 40% responded favorably to a host personally reading and endorsing a product, compared with 27% for a pre-recorded ad not read by the host.
Recognizing or liking the host drove 45% of first tries in the past three months, nearly matching seeing multiple social media clips (46%) and ahead of subject matter (38%). A majority (55%) decide within five minutes whether to keep listening to a new podcast, including 14% who decide within the first minute. Boring talk (38%) and too much meaningless talk at the start (36%) topped the reasons for abandoning a first try.
Only 26% of respondents feel they have a direct line to give a host feedback, and 64% have never contacted a podcast host. Among those who have, 65% describe the experience as great, and 47% say they are likely to listen for a chance to interact with a host.
In April, Jacobs Media’s Techsurvey 2026 found six in ten core commercial radio listeners cited DJs, hosts, and shows as a main reason they tune in, compared with 53% for favorite songs and artists. Personalities have led music in that study every year since 2019. In 2025, Techsurvey also found that a favorite personality or show leaving the air had become a top reason some listeners were tuning in less.
The Podcast Study’s webinar series continues with “Turning Listeners into Superfans” on October 6 and “Beyond the Pre-Roll” on October 13, followed by an October 20 session focused on findings for broadcasters, personalities, programmers, sellers, and advertisers.
