Audacy Richmond’s Newsradio WRVA (WRVA-AM) teamed up with Virginia Urology, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, and Fans for the Cure to host the second annual “Hitting Prostate Cancer Out Of The Park” event, held September 8 at CarMax Park.
The event provided more than 70 free prostate screenings, open to men 45 and older and younger men with a family history of the disease, addressing a community health gap for men without insurance or navigating financial hardship.
Rich Herrera, who joined WRVA as host of Richmond’s Morning News in March 2025, had encouraged men to get screened before. Focused on removing financial barriers, Herrera partnered with Fans for the Cure, an organization that uses baseball’s platform for health outreach, to launch the event, which delivered 49 no-cost screenings in its first year.
Herrera’s effort came full circle when another listener told him that a man had attended the first event and gotten screened after hearing about it on WRVA. The screening led to an early diagnosis, timely treatment, and a now cancer-free outcome.
Herrera said, “I am deeply grateful to everyone behind the scenes who worked tirelessly to bring this initiative together. Being rooted in the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do. Local radio has the power to save lives, and through this event, we helped a listener discover a cancer he didn’t know he had.”
