Tulsa’s Roy D. Mercer Creators Named To OAB Hall Of Fame

The two voices who made Roy D. Mercer a Sooner State radio staple will be inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Phil Stone and Brent Douglas of iHeartMedia Tulsa’s KMOD were posthumously named to the Class of 2027.

Stone and Douglas hosted KMOD’s Morning Zoo for nearly 27 years.

Their best-known creation was Roy D. Mercer, a fictional prank-calling character voiced by Douglas. The bit grew from a Tulsa radio comedy segment into a national phenomenon, and the Roy D. Mercer recordings were released as comedy albums. The Tulsa Press Club gave the pair its Radio Icon Award in 2005, and the OAB nominated them numerous times for morning show personality honors.

Stone died in 2012, shortly after the show ended. Douglas died in February 2025.

The OAB’s Class of 2027 induction is set for April 1, 2027.

Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters President Will Payne said, “There are certain broadcasters who become more than voices on the radio. They become part of the lives and memories of their listeners. Phil Stone and Brent Douglas did exactly that. For nearly three decades, they made Oklahoma laugh, built an incredibly loyal audience, and created comedy that reached far beyond Tulsa. For generations of listeners, all it took was hearing, ‘How big a boy are ya?’ and you knew exactly who was on the other end of the phone. Roy D. Mercer became a radio legend, but the real magic was always Phil and Brent. Their talent, chemistry, creativity, and originality left a lasting mark on Oklahoma broadcasting, and we are incredibly proud to welcome them into the OAB Hall of Fame.”
